Comparing the gradual change in media, habit of audience and place of watching television broadcasting over decades in Hong Kong.

Background

The days of television broadcasting in the seventies of Hong Kong are not new to the audience of most yester-generation, but only a few people had watched the television in the fifties and early sixties because of the high subscription fee. Meanwhile the existing young audience is too familiar with the present media that may be “too new to the old”. There is not much initiative to drive this new generation in looking back to the past that is “too old to the new”.

It seems that there is not much value to conduct any study on this as everybody, comprised both aged and youth, know the story of their own generation to a certain extent. In fact, there is a lack of article bringing the stories of both generations together allowing these two groups of audience to get know of their missing part, let alone any research about this. This study aims to fill up the niche that has been ignored. The television industry is chosen as a facet to explore the behaviour and cultural identity of generations in different periods by studying the interrelation and interaction among its media, audience, and place.

This study does not purely serve as a historical description or review on the development of television industry in Hong Kong, but it serves as a cultural bridge between groups of audience spanning from the sixties to now. Besides as a platform for nostalgia or knowing more to yesteryears, it aims to explore or identify the cultural identity of the existing generation. Any commercial or political issue as reflected from the coverage of outlets, if any, is not explored in this study.
