Conclusion

Visiting somebody’s home and watch television was also a form of social gathering in the 1960’s. Members of different families were also brought together to share and interact with one another under this medium, besides family member of the same house.

With the advancement of technology, audiences in families are separated and delocalised to watch anytime anywhere.

Notwithstanding this, the media space by means of internet today allows groups of people interact together, even when they are not present in the same place and time. Television audience of a show from the internet can leave their comments or discussing with one another who are strangers in the cyber space. Audience, whether are in the same place and time or not, are interact more efficient than traditional television in those days when audience could only express their opinion in newspapers or television magazines as a form of interaction.

A comparison table of different decades compare and contrast the media used, the watching behaviour of audience and place of watching is as follows:

Table 1: Comparing the gradual change in media, habit of audience and place of watching television broadcasting over decades in Hong Kong.

Note:

  1. It was not a clear cut between each decade.

  • Free to air broadcasting TV was from late 60’s onwards.

  • Paid TV and satellite TV emerged or became popular from the 90’s to millenniums.

  • Internet was available to public from 90’s but became popular from late 90’s to the millenniums.

  • Mobile data transfer for mobile phone started from the 2010’s but became popular later.

  • The TV top boxes receives data through the internet and is different from those top boxes in the millenniums for receiving digital TV broadcasting.

    2. The table only describes a general public trend.

To conclude, the television broadcasting media has been expanded from cable and wireless only to VCDs, lDs, DVDs, and satellites as supplements. Now, it is further extended through the internet with mobile phones, computers, and the newer generation of TV top boxes. Television is now reviving and sustaining to its newer form -  Smart TV (Android TV).

The viewing habit changes dramatically from grouping viewers of different families and quickly delocalised to individual families when each family could afford a television set. Members of an individual family later splitted away to watch at different location of the house. Now, the watching habit is anytime anywhere.

Furthermore, any individual today can interact with comments on television programmes of yesterdays. I anticipate the audience tomorrow will shuttle through even more and newer media without any limitations in space and time.
